The built-up roofing system on the Torrington Readiness Center was a prime candidate for a fluid-applied spray foam and coating roof restoration. Built-up roofs, also known as BUR roofing systems or "tar and gravel" roofs, are installed by laying down alternating layers of asphalt tar and fabric membrane directly onto the roof deck. The final layer of the BUR roofing system consists of small stone or gravel.
As the tar degrades from UV exposure, it becomes weak and brittle. As long as moisture is not present and the BUR roofing system is still well-adhered, it can be restored by means of a spray polyurethane foam roofing system.
By using a SPF roofing system, building owners save the landfills from unnecessary waste because it can be applied directly over the existing system. Plus, they turn a membrane roof into a seamless waterproof membrane that adds a significant amount of insulating value.
